Postdoctoral Scholarship in Infectious Disease Modelling

Funding is available for a postdoctoral fellowship position in the area of the computational & statistical modelling of infectious disease transmission using individual-level models with Dr. Rob Deardon at the University of Calgary.

The successful candidate will be required to:

1. Develop methodology for the analysis of infectious disease data;

2. Produce R packages to implement pre-existing and newly developed methodology for the analysis of infectious disease data;

3. Work in a collaborative effort with both statisticians working in Dr. Deardon’s group, and epidemiologists in public health and/or the veterinary sciences;

4. Write papers and publish in scientific venues (i.e. conferences, journals).

The chosen candidate will have excellent computational and analytical skills and at least a strong statistical background. The chosen candidate must have a PhD in statistics, computer science, or a related subject.

Experience in one or more of the following areas is also desirable, though not essential:

Bayesian analysis;

computational techniques such as MCMC, approximate Bayesian computation, emulation (e.g. Gaussian process based) and/or machine learning tools;

infectious disease modelling (especially individual-level models);

producing R packages/wrappers;

faster, lower-level languages such as C or Fortran.
The funding available is for two years in the first instance and will provide for a stipend of CDN $50,000, as well as funds for computer equipment, travel to conferences and workshops, etc.. The chosen candidate will be encouraged (and helped) to apply for funding to extend this position.
