The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced that Paul McNicholas is the recipient of the John. L. Synge Award. Paul, previously CANSSI’s Associate Director for Ontario, is the Canada Research Chair in Computational Statistics at McMaster University, Director of the MacDATA Institute, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Classification. This distinction, created in 1986, is given by the RSC on an irregular basis for outstanding research in the mathematical sciences.
Paul is an internationally recognized leader in computational statistics research. His work is at the forefront of investigations in classification and clustering using mixture models, and he has developed important methodology covering almost every aspect of the field. He has pioneered new methods and tools to analyse large or complex datasets and collaborates with researchers from diverse disciplines to apply these approaches to difficult real data problems.
